Lungiswa (Lungi) P Mkize is a Professional Nurse, Midwife, Nurse Administrator, Nurse Educator, Community Health nurse and Psychiatric Nurse. 

She holds a Master’s Degree in Mental Health Nursing obtained from the University of Natal. Lungi’s Masters Research was on Pathways to Mental Health care in KwaZulu-Natal which was published in Curationis.

Lungi previously worked as a Community Psychiatric Nurse in Midlands Complex hospitals and Durban; joined School of Nursing UKZN as a Lecturer in Mental Health Programme; where she taught, mentored and supervised students from across the African continent. 

She was involved in the education and training of students from B Nursing Undergraduate Degree to Master’s degree. She mentored and graduated a number of Postgraduate students in Mental Health.

Presently, Mrs Mkize is working for the Provincial Department of Health in KZN as a Deputy Director in Mental Health Programme responsible for Hospital/Specialised Services. Her leadership in the field of Mental Health has contributed to her recognition provincially and Nationally. 

She has contributed in development of the following policies of the Department of Health: a) Psychosocial Rehabilitation Policy; b) Inputs in the development of National Mental Health Policy Framework and Strategic Plan 2013-2020 through the KZN Mental Health Summit in 2012; c) KZN Strategic Plan 2014-2019: Integrated Mental Health and Substance Abuse; d) Developed Terms of Reference of Provincial Technical Advisory Committee on Mental Health; e) Actively involved with Forensic Mental Health Programme in collaboration with Department of Justice; e) Developing a Policy on Seclusion and Mechanical Restraint of Mental Health Care Users.

Mrs Mkize is happily married with three grown-up children and has four grandchildren.
